The Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation will be changing its name to reflect its trade body responsibilities and membership for the future. From 1 November, SSPO will become Salmon Scotland, representing Scotland's salmon producing companies and the wider supply chain.

A consortium of organisations in Scotland is developing a more accurate way of predicting how salmon farms interact with their surrounding environment, helping to inform decisions on future farm locations, the development of existing farms, and enhancing the sector's overall sustainability.

Anglers and farmers are united in a desire to help wild salmon survive. The SSPO's Hamish MacDonell talked to Fish Farmer about this issue. It was the angler who first introduced me to the Tweed who came up with it. We were fishing Middle Pavilion, the broad, unhurried beat that sweeps down from Galashiels to Melrose and where, under his guidance, I was about to hook a decent sea trout."If someone fishes, you can be sure they're alright," he said, mending the line with a flick of his wrist while making it clear that, as far as he was concerned, that was his number one rule for life.

Yifeng, is a postgraduate Political Science student who undertook a paid internship with the SSPO in the summer of 2021. Scotland has a rich history of salmon resources, and this heritage relies on ensuring a long-term future for wild salmonid stocks. To help tackle the current decline in wild salmon and sea trout within Scottish rivers, more than £70,000 has just been awarded to organisations across Scotland working to enhance and protect wild fisheries and habitats.

Today (6th August 2021) Tavish Scott, Chief Executive of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO), the trade body which represents all salmon farmers in Scotland, today welcomed the appointment of Professor Russel Griggs to lead the Scottish Government's reform of fish farming regulation. This was a key SNP manifesto commitment from the Scottish Parliament elections.

On 14th June 2021 the UK Government announced its intention to disband the Scottish Seafood Exports Taskforce, a combined UK and Scottish Government taskforce which was set up at the urging of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO).

As every economist knows, there are three types of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics. But that view is not confined to economists. It is now shared by many in the Scottish salmon sector, thanks to an extraordinary episode over export figures.
